What is the correct process to protect (patent, copyright, trademark, other) software?

I have written a computer program and would like to impart it available for others to use. However, I also want to protect it so no one else steals my point.

If you look on Wikipedia Commons it says it's in the portion publicly bailiwick because the copyright expired.
